Mission Statement:

The mission of the Knox County Social Studies department is to teach the knowledge, skills, and attitudes that will enable students to become responsible, active citizens in a diverse, global society.

Department Beliefs:

The Social Studies department believes:

  • Social studies links the past, present, and future.
  • Social studies develops an appreciation for our country’s heritage.
  • Social studies develops an understanding of an individual’s role in the family, the community, the state, the nation, and in a global society.
  • Social studies promotes an understanding of global cultures past and present.
  • Social studies develops knowledge, skills, and attitudes that enable individuals to make informed personal and social decisions that contribute to life-long learning.
  • Social studies develops the skills that enable individuals to develop an understanding of our country’s economic system and to become effective producers and consumers.
  • Social studies promotes the attributes of good citizenship.

Student Learning Goals:

  • Students will develop a respect for their rights and the rights of others.
  • Students will develop the knowledge, skills, and attitudes that will foster responsible, global citizenship.
  • Students will develop the skills necessary to adapt to an ever-changing society.
  • Students will understand how society establishes governing institutions and distributes power and authority.
  • Students will study, analyze, and interpret data in order to develop a historical perspective to assist in making informed choices and decisions for the present.
  • Students will develop global and multicultural perspectives.

The Social Studies Curriculum/Content Provides Critical Support for Knox County’s Instructional Goals (specifically Literacy and 100-90-90-90 Initiatives), School Board & Individual School Missions, and the Superintendent’s Strategic Plan by:

  • Supporting the Common Good.
  • Adopting Common and Multiple Perspectives .
  • Applying Knowledge, Skills, and Values to Civic Action.
  • Acquiring Information and Manipulating Data.
  • Developing and Presenting Policies, Arguments, and Stories.
  • Constructing New Knowledge.
  • Implementing a Collaboratively Developed Standards- Based Curriculum with Common Pacing and Frequent Formative Assessments.
  • Using Data to Improve Instruction.
  • Addressing the ACT College Readiness Standards for Reading & Writing throughout the K-12 Curriculum.
  • Encouraging Cross-Curricular Instruction to  Support High-Stakes Subject Areas such as Math & Reading.

Exciting Contest Opportunity!

Knoxville Turkish Cultural Center, a local non-profit organization located in West Knoxville, along with Istanbul Center, located in midtown Atlanta presents to you an exciting program for students and teachers geared towards an interdisciplinary approach to enhancing several core skills in students no matter what discipline they may study.

 

1) 6th Annual Global Connections Art Contest- Top-placing students and their sponsoring teachers will win 10-day trips to Turkey in summer 2012! The Contest is co-curricular and sponsored in part by the Georgia Department of Education and the United Nations Alliance of Civilizations. This year's theme is "1 Billion Hungry in the World: What's Your Role?" More details may be found online at www.artessay.org.

Ms. Melendy
Congratulations to Amy Melendy, 6th grade social studies teacher at Cedar Bluff Middle School, for being selected to participate in the Fulbright-Hays Seminars Abroad Program to Greece and Turkey.

This program provides short-term study and travel seminars abroad for U.S. educators in the social sciences and humanities for the purpose of improving their understanding and knowledge of the people and culture of other countries. There are approximately 10 seminars with 16 participants in each seminar annually.

Seminars are four to six weeks in duration and are conducted in the summer. The U.S. Department of  Education’s Fulbright-Hays Seminars Abroad Program is administered by the International and Foreign Language Education, Office of Postsecondary Education in cooperation with the Fulbright Commission, U.S. Department of State.

Curriculum
 Elementary Curriculum
A Framework for the KCS Social Studies Department's Essential Learning Expectations & State Student Performance Indicators (SPI's). Grades Three - Five Social Studies Curriculums are assessed through both KCS Benchmark Tests and State TCAP assessments.
 Middle School Curriculum
A Framework for the KCS Social Studies Department's Essential Learning Expectations & State Student Performance Indicators (SPI's). Grades Six - Eight Social Studies Curriculums are assessed through both KCS Benchmark Tests and State TCAP assessments.
 High School Curriculum
A Framework for the KCS Social Studies Department's Essential Learning Expectations & State Student Performance Indicators (SPI's). High School Social Studies courses include a system-wide End-of-Course Assessment, which reflects both KCS Curriculum and State Standards. The United States History course, which reflects KCS Essential Learnings and State Standards, includes local system-wide Unit Tests and a State End-of-Course Examination.
